Kilimanjaro is virtually the center of the northern tourist circuit stretching from the relaxed coastal municipal of Tanga in the east across the Usambara and Pare mountains to the Serengeti national park to the west. Mount Kilimanjaro derives its name from a local phrase "Kyalema kyaro" which literally means "that which can not be conquered".
