Administratively, Tanzania is subdivided into regions and districts, the number of which increase with the growing population. In 2000, there were 25 regions consisting of 94 districts. Mainland Tanzania consist of 20 regions.
Outstanding geographical features include Africa's highest maountain, mount Kilimanjaro which is ft.;the world second largest lake, lake Victoria; and its second deepest lake, lake Tanganyika.
A small rocky gorge near the equator in Tanzania's vast Serengeti plateau has provided archaeological evidence indicating that the oldest known man in his present form live in this country over 13/4 millions years ago.
however these ancestors or near-ancestors of modern man, Australopithecus ( " Zinjanthropus" ) boisei and the probably more advanced and toolmaking Homohabilies, have the little bearing on the population of Tanzania today.
